Cold sores are the result of the herpes simplex virus creating new virus particles.

It works like this.

The herpes simplex virus enters a cell. It forces the cell to create clones of the virus. When full, the original virus will destroy the cell to release the newly created copies. Thousands of destroyed cells make up the cold sore ulcer.

ARGININE AND LYSINE REALLY AFFECTS COLD SORES.

Lysine and arginine are two amino acids that you may have heard about. They both are very important in controlling cold sore outbreaks.

Arginine is the essential protein in herpes simplex virus creation. Cells cannot create herpes virus without it. Your cells store arginine in special receptors within the cell.

Lysine somewhat mimics arginine but cannot be used to make herpes virus particles. If you flood your cells with lysine, the cells will store this protein in place of the arginine. In effect, the lysine pushes the arginine out, creating a shortage.

If the herpes simplex virus senses an arginine shortage, it will give up and return to the dormant state.

Most foods that contain lysine also contain arginine. The higher the lysine content, the more they prevent cold sores. The higher the arginine content, the more those foods can CAUSE cold sores.

Any food that contains a 2 to 1 ratio of lysine over arginine (or close to it) is ideal for preventing cold sores and oral herpes.

The better you balance your diet, the more success you will have. Do not give up the foods you love. Just offset the high arginine foods with some additional high lysine foods at this or the next meal.

REDUCE COLD SORE ACTIVITY WITH THESE HIGH LYSINE FOODS.

High lysine foods that help prevent cold sores include most meat - especially fish, beef, turkey and chicken. Eggs, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products are high in lysine and low in arginine.

Ricotta cheese is very rich in lysine. Soy products and brewers yeast are also good sources. Flounder is a fish that is extremely high in lysine. You will get 14,000 milligrams per 450 grams (pound) of this tasty seafood.

FOOD THAT CAUSES COLD SORES.

High arginine foods can help cause your painful and frequent cold sores. Here are the main ones to watch out for.

These foods have higher content of arginine to lysine. Most nuts including both tree nuts and ground nuts. Also, grains such as wheat and oats are high in arginine.

Seeds, such as sunflower and sesame, are higher in arginine than lysine. Most vegetables and legumes, such as carrots, radishes, eggplant, beans and cabbage, are also arginine foods. Chocolate is very high in arginine.

Perhaps you do not wish to change your diet as outlined above. You surely would miss out on the numerous beneficial nutrients provided by vegetables and beans. I do not believe this to be healthy for any length of time.

Rather than change your diet too much, try just adding some of the high lysine foods to your current diet. This alone can make the difference you need.

LYSINE CAPSULES TO THE RESCUE.

Most people use lysine supplements instead of a drastic change in diet. They come in 500-milligram capsules, are economical and very convenient.

Normal dosage, using lysine as an oral herpes cold sore treatment, is six to eight capsules each day during a cold sore event. For prevention, try one or two capsules daily between outbreaks.
